Reports: Consumers shop for everything online

Forget stores, more and more shoppers are buying online - and not just for digital content or cheap designer goods. Two new studies are outlining the trends that are hitting not only retailers but grocers.

First, SAP SE has released new data showing a strong uptick in online grocery buys. Their survey found 1 in 5 US shoppers 'regularly' buy groceries online; in 2015 about 21% of US adults had purchased groceries online vs. the 11% who had done so in 2013.

These online 'trips' are more specific than the trips taken to actual stores. Researchers found online grocery shoppers are looking for specific items, and sometimes grocery subscriptions.

"A digital core is the foundation of a retailer's digital value network," said Lori Mitchell-Keller, global general manager of consumer industries for SAP. "Retailers that operate a true digital enterprise can empower the workforce and deliver a better user experience that goes beyond a mobile smartphone or tablet. They can respond to shoppers in real time -- with a 360-degree view of the customer."

Meanwhile, RocketFuel has released new data about which devices consumers are most attached to, and what they're doing on those devices. The report also shows that consumers are more willing to share their information if it means getting more relevant advertising - more than half (58%) were 'generally comfortable' sharing their information via wearables; smartphones and connected devices also made the list.

As to the value of online customers, Stitch Labs data shows returning online customers account for about 23% of retailers' revenue, and the over a year return customers spend about twice as much as new customers, with health/personal care items, clothing/accessories and home furnishings where return customers spend the most.
