Report: Entertainment leading app revenue

Mobile consumers like to be entertained. That's one of the big takeaways from new AppAnnie data which indicates entertainment and music continue to lead app revenue. The biggest growth area in entertainment is from streaming video apps.

App Annie has released new mobile trends data focused on Q1 2016; among the interesting findings: streaming video is key to mobile growth. Their data shows than only 4 months after launching in-app subscriptions, Netflix became the top streaming video app on iOS devices; the US and China lead the video revenue categories worldwide.

In the music category, Spotify continues to reign as the top streaming service (worldwide), although local hubs QQ Music and Tidal both made large strides forward.

Other interesting findings from the App Annie report include:

• In emerging marketing, games are leading in growth and revenue
• Globally, gaming downloads are expected to increase to more than 147b this year
• eSports - mobile gaming events - are forecast to show record growth over the next year

China jumped Japan to become the country with the second highest quarterly revenue in the iOS app store. The US continues to lead that category. Year over year, China saw iOS revenue increase 2.2 times. China also jumped Japan in total revenue from app store games to become the country with the second highest iOS app store games revenue.
