Mobile ticketing volume to double by 2020

The number of tickets purchased via mobile will more than double by 2020, according to the latest figures published by Juniper Research.

Juniper's report, 'Mobile and online ticketing: Deep dive strategy and competition 2016-2020', forecasts that 23 billion transport and events tickets will be purchased worldwide by mobile by the end of the decade. That's more than double the volume expected for this year.

The growth will be driven by transport agencies and organizations enhancing app capabilities and integrating other services such as Apple Pay.

Airline app ticketing and events ticketing are leading the way, globally, in terms of deployment and user adoption, says the report. The airline industry saw the highest YoY growth last year with a 50% rise in app-based ticketing users. In fact, app-based ticketing is becoming the favored platform among airline passengers and is expected to growth a further 40% this year.

"While app-based ticketing user adoption continues to be strong across a range of ticketing markets, sales volume growth will be driven by low-value metro and bus ticket purchases, most notably in the U.S. market," said Nitin Bhas, Juniper research author.

However, Bhas also suggests that, in order for users to have a better app-ticketing experience, and to increase adoption, additional services need to be incorporated, including location-based and content delivery.
