eSports drive 21% of viewership on Twitch

Is Twitch driving eSports, or is eSports driving Twitch? New research from games, eSports and mobile intelligence firm Newzoo suggests the latter is true. Either way, eSports is a fast-growing entertainment category that is set to see significant growth over the coming years.

On live-streaming website Twitch, which boasts more than 100 million viewers each month, eSports drives 21.3% of viewership, according to Newzoo. Between July 2015 and December 2015, fans watched nearly half a billion hours (475.5 million) of eSports content across all franchises.

Newzoo's data also revealed the impact eSports has on regular consumer content. When the spring season of North America's League Championship Series began there was a marked reduction in the number of consumer hours (those watching a stream for the game and not a tournament or large gaming event).

Turn back the clock a few years and it would seem impossible to imagine that competitive gaming would come out of the lounge into major venues seating thousands of spectators. And there's more growth to come, says Newzoo. The firm's 2016 Global Esports Market Report showed worldwide earnings of $325 million in 2015 but, by 2019, as corporations begin to take more note and increase sponsorship and marketing, that's expected to increase to more than $1 billion worldwide.

Recent research from The NPD Group contains some good news for games marketers. Their survey of 1,722 people in February of this year found that more than two-thirds (69%) of eSports viewers have purchased a game after watching it being played in an eSports event.

However, the reverse is also true with two-thirds of those watching eSports already playing the game they are watching. In fact, the report suggests that eSports viewers watch an event based not on the prize money or the size of a tournament, but on which games they enjoy the most.
