Despite growth of ecommerce retailers plan physical store expansions

Despite the rise of online and mobile shopping, more than 8 in 10 of 150 international retail brands plan to open more stores in 2016, according to property firm CBRE's latest research.

In their seventh annual 'How Active are Retailers Globally?' report, CBRE reveals that 83%of more than 150 international retail brands said the rise of ecommerce would not stop them open more stores in 2016. More than two-thirds (67%) plan to open up to 20 new stores and 17% more than 40.

While a quarter are looking to open more stores in the U.S., and 27% in China, Western Europe was the most popular with 35% set to expand store openings into Germany and 33% in France. Twenty-nine percent plan to expand in the UK.

High streets (76%) and regional shopping malls (72%) were noted as the most popular formats for expansion, with a significant number of participants also citing travel hubs.

"Despite the backdrop of economic uncertainty and the popularity of online shopping growing year on year, a physical store presence in key locations is still critical to the strength of a brand's presence," says Mark Burlton, global executive, retail occupier team, EMEA, at CBRE.
