Top 5 tips to improve business security

While the cloud and BYOD policies have made it simpler for employees to work from anywhere, they have also made it simpler for businesses to be hacked. One expert offers his top 5 tips to keep your business better secured online.

First, keep software updated

"[This] eliminates security weaknesses. Windows, Macs, and all browsers regularly provide free software updates; take advantage of these to close security loopholes," said Bill Carey, Vice President of Marketing, RoboForm. "[Also] when you're done with using a website, log off and close your browser. This will prevent others from gaining access to your account."

Second, upgrade your passwords

"Create passwords with combinations of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters," said Carey. "Don't use personal information in your password, such as your name, your partner's name, your child's name, your occupation, telephone number, birth day, etc. [And] use the 'Keystroke' method for making passwords. Choose a password and create a keyboard mapping system. One key to the left and one up would make the password 'tinmen' change to '47gh2g'."

Third, read emails as plain text

"Disable pictures on your email and read in plain text. The sender will not be able to identify if you're opened the email," said Carey. "Have a disposable email address. One give your actual email address out to people who need it. This will avoid mass spam and keep your inbox clean.

Fourth, don't list your passwords

"Do not keep a record or list of your passwords in unencrypted files on your computer or phone," said Carey.

Fifth, ensure your employees understand safety precautions

"Small businesses have to hold their employees accountable for their security. Employees must adopt safe security habits to keep their information and the company's information protected," said Carey. "Consider putting a formal cyber security policy into effect."
