Small business trends to watch in 2016

Small business may boom in 2016, and one expert believes 2015 will show us where SMBs are going. Hint: it's a service industry economy, baby.

First, look for more service-based small businesses. 99Designs notes that the number of requests for new restaurants and locally-based alcohol brands skyrocketed in 2015. That points to more of these establishments hitting your region in 2016.

"It appears consumers are taking the edge off and entrepreneurs are taking note. Micro Breweries and Wineries are two of the hottest categories for new logo designs. They're meeting a demand and plan to look good doing it," writes the company. "No surprise that new restaurants will continue to sprout up in 2016; however, 99Designs is seeing that more people in the hospitality industry are working hard to maintain an element of design and an appeal that is ever-evovling with the time and their customers."

Second, subscriptions are here to stay. Who doesn't prefer at-home delivery these days? More and more on-demand services and subscription offerings are popping up to cater to a market that prefers to hit the purchase button instead of hitting the gas to the nearest store, notes 99Designs.

Third, cannabis crazy. According to 99Designs, services related to the sale of marijuana/cannabis surged throughout 2015 as more states legalized it. They believe this trend will continue into 2016.
