U.S. consumers have strong opinions on Thanksgiving Day store opening

A third of U.S. consumers say they 'hate' retail stores being open on Thanksgiving Day and some find it 'annoying'. That's according to a new survey commissioned by location-based mobile platform Retale.

Of the 1,000 adult consumers in the U.S. surveyed by Retale, the majority (54%) have no intention of shopping in a store on Thanksgiving Day this year. In fact, when asked what they think about stores being open on that day, 33% had a strong opinion agreeing with the statement "I hate it" while 13% said it was "annoying".

Dislike of stores opening on Thanksgiving Day increases with age. While more than half (57%) of Millennials said they plan to shop in a store on that day, among those age 35 and over that number drops to 37%

Thirty-seven percent of Millennials responded negatively when asked to describe their thoughts on stores opening on Thanksgiving Day, with 24% saying "I hate it" and 13% calling it "annoying", while 52% responded positively (24% saying "it's great" and 28% calling it "okay"). Of those over the age of 35, the majority (51%) found Thanksgiving Day shopping to be a negative experience (38% "hate" and 13% "annoying"), with just 35% responding positively (19% "great" and 16% "okay").

Many stores in the U.S. will be closing for Thanksgiving Day, giving their employees a chance to spend time with their families. Those stores include Costco, BJ's, REI, T.J.Maxx, Crate and Barrell, Nordstom and DSW, to name just a few. However, many will be opening early such as Kmart and Meijer who will both be opening their doors at 6a.m. on Thanksgiving Day morning.

The 'Boycott Shopping on Thanksgiving Day' community on Facebook has a 'Naughty or Nice' list detailing those retailers who are open or closed on Thanksgiving Day.
