Top 3 tips to protect your business in the cloud
First, educate super-users
“According to a study by CloudLock, 1 percent of users are responsible for 75 percent of risk. That means a mistake by one person can cause major problems. So, to avoid simple mistakes, make sure your super-users are educated. Super-users are the people with the most access. If you provide them with security training and make sure they understand the risk, they will be less likely to make a mistake or accidentally give away a password,” said John Yung, CEO, Appcara. “In addition, go through your directory every few months to make sure only people who need advanced access have it. Limit the number of people with access and you’ll limit the chance that you get things stolen.”
Second, implement smart access policies
“According to Verizon’s 2014 Data Breach Investigations Report, two out of three attacks involve an attempt to steal an employee password. Attackers will often try to figure out weak passwords before they even need to steal them,” said Yung. “Implement password systems that require strong passwords from employees. Also, make employees change their password at least every six months.”
Third, encrypt
“When possible, encrypt your data. This makes it so someone can only open a file if they have a password. If you don’t want to encrypt all of your data, only encrypt highly sensitive information. If a breach happens, your sensitive data will be safe if it’s encrypted,” said Yung.
