Expert: How to determine which maturity phase your business is in

Several studies point to the correlation between the performance of a company and its maturity of it's enterprise mobility platform. While the cause & effect relationship between mobility and performance is still up for debate, it has been found that organizations with an enterprise-wide mobility strategy demonstrate higher revenue growth and better operating margins. How can brands tell if they're in the Aware, Reactive or Proactive stage?

Kristina: How can brands determine which phase they are in?

Harjot Sidhu, VP of Consulting at Vox Mobile: After providing a description of maturity levels, our clients are typically very quick and honest at highlighting their current maturity levels. Most organizations are in the range 1.5-2.5 (out of 5) for most of the categories assessed. However, it's typically not that simple as many organizations are demonstrating "pockets" of innovation and transformation from various groups that may actually be unauthorized behavior. We recognize this activity with "slivers" of higher maturity but still provide a primary maturity level based on the entire organization. This can be seen visually in our Mobile Maturity Matrix.

Kristina: What are your top 3 tips for brands to mature their mobility?

Harjot: 1. Most organizations have actually become worse at maintaining or progressing their maturity levels due to day-to-day tactical activities overwhelming resources and preventing strategic initiatives from forming or being executed. We refer to this as an organization's "M-Gap". I'm sure it comes as no surprise that our recommendation to organizations is to offload those day-to-day tactical activities to a Managed Mobility Services organizations such as Vox Mobile.
2. Determine the current mobile maturity and the target maturity, underlying target characteristics along with business priority. This is the purpose of the Mobile Maturity Assessment.
3. Map the activities necessary to achieve the target maturity along with dependencies. Essentially, build a mobility roadmap or blueprint. This is the purpose to a follow-up consulting module "Enterprise Mobility Strategy and Roadmap".
