Over half of U.S. households have TV connected to the Internet

Not content with watching or browsing Internet content on the smaller screens of my laptop or tablet, I bought Chromecast and it seems that I've joined an increasing number of consumers who are now connecting their TV to the Internet.

On a daily basis, a third (33%) of U.S. adults watch video on non-TV devices such as laptops, mobile phones, iPads, tablets, and eReaders, and 58% do so weekly - up from 27% and 53% respectively two years ago.

However, according to a new report from the Leichtman Research Group (LRG), more than half (56%) of all U.S. households now have at least one of their television sets connected to the Internet to enable them to watch Internet content on the largest screen possible. Connections are being made via smart TVs, Blu-ray players, a video game system or over-the-top devices such as Chromecast, Apple TV or Roku. Five years ago that figure was just 24%.

LRG's annual 'Emerging Video Services IX' study also found that while 27% of U.S. households have a television connected via just one device, even more (29%) are connected via several - up from 17% in 2013.

"Internet-delivered video services and platform have grown significantly over the past few years, and one-third of adults now watch video on non-TV devices daily," said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc. "Yet, with over half of US households now having at least one connected TV set, Internet-delivered video is also increasingly being watched on the TV, exemplifying the desire to watch longer-form video on the best available screen."
