More than a quarter (27.5%) of global online payments were made via mobile in the first quarter of 2015, according to the latest Mobile Payments Index from Adyen, up from 25.8% in Q4 2014 and a rise of a significant 39% YoY. The Index tracks mobile payment data from web-based transactions across Adyen's customer base.

But it is the UK that stands head and shoulders above the rest of the globe. In the first quarter of 2015 44.4% of online payments made in the UK were done using a mobile device. In Q1 2014 that figure was 36.9%. Two-thirds (66%) of those mobile payments were made via a smartphone.

In the U.S. growth was similarly impressive with 26.7% of online payments made via mobile.

Europe saw the greatest growth in mobile payments out of all the regions. While Asian markets saw 20% of online payments made via mobile, Europe had 28.6%.

"The UK's position as the world's number one in mobile payments speaks volumes for the country's payments infrastructure, its highly competitive mobile network landscape and the general populations' continued willingness to exploit new payment channels," adds Myles Dawson, UK Country Manager, Adyen.
