Ecomm Reports: Traffic up, mobile spending up

Two new reports into the ecommerce space paint an interesting picture for online retailers: Euclid's newest data shows spending down while traffic to stores has increased, and Adyen reports more and more shopping is being done via mobile.

First, Adyen has released their Mobile Payments Index which finds more than one-quarter (27%) of global online payments are made via mobile device. In Q1 2015 their data shows 26% of US-based payments are made via mobile while 28% of payments from Europe are made via mobile device.

"Tablets may well be approaching market saturation but thanks to retailers and businesses focusing on optimizing the payment process for the channel, they are attracting increasing spend as consumers become more comfortable using these devices to pay for things online," said Roelant Prins, Chief Commercial Officer, Adyen. "There has been a seismic shift in how and where people are comfortable spending money. All mobile channels in the past 12 months have experienced impressive uplift."

Their report also shows tablets are getting higher transaction rates than other devices, but in terms of the volume of sales, smartphones are winning the global transaction race.

Adyen's Global Ecommerce Payments Guide further finds local payment options are key for online retailers. Researchers point to the different ways consumers use credit cards online - only 25% of German shoppers use credit cards online while only one-third of Brazilians have credit cards capable of making international payments.

This, say the report authors, is why retailers need to think about payment function down to the local level.

Meanwhile, Euclid's latest data shows retail traffic inching up in April despite slower spending during tax month. Year over year their data shows a 1% decline in general merchandise spending and a 2% decline in clothing/apparel spending. However, they also say shopper traffic increased by 12% YoY, and that the time shoppers spent in stores increased by 18% YoY.
