Top 3 tips to reduce shopping cart abandonment

On average retailers see a 3% conversion rate; couple that with shopping cart abandon rates of more than 60% and it may seem ecommerce isn't worth the hassle. The truth is ecommerce can be quite lucrative if brands know how to connect with shoppers online.

Improve shopping cart descriptions. Add high-resolution product photos with multiple angles. Offer pop-up special deals to keep users intimated. Advertise low shipping rates and generous returns policies. All of these are ways brands have improved their online conversion rates, and all are solid. But, how can brands reduce those shopping cart abandon rates?

First, offer cheap, expedited shipping, or free shipping.

"There are ways that you can factor free shipping into your bottom line. Getting locked into low-cost shipping rates, via discount providers, can enable you to offer affordable options that don't eat into your bottom line," said Chris Dunn, Director of Business Development, TrueShip.

Second, look at the returns policy.

"Revamp your returns policy and make a statement that returns at your store are convenient, automated and hassle-free. Increase consumer confidence by assuring consumers that returns won't be difficult. Offer free return shipping, and you'll dramatically influence online sales," advises Dunn.

Third, don't forget to streamline the shopping experience.

"Assure consumers that your site is safe and secure, state shipping costs upfront, offer a guest checkout and reduce the checkout process to as few clicks as possible, and you'll see a noticeable drop in cart abandonment rates," said Dunn.
