Reports: SMBs challenged by mobile, outdated tools

Two new reports out this week underline the importance of up-to-date tools and mobile to small businesses in our digital world. First, Concur has found that most SMBs are running on out-dated expense management tools.

Using out-dated tools to keep track of expenses can result in SMBs not have the right information to pay for everything from travel expenses to inventory. The survey also showed that nearly 40% rely on paper-based expense submissions even though automating these kinds of expenses has been shown to decrease both the costs of these transactions and the processing of requests.

"SMBs face enough challenges as it is without having to worry about spend management capabilities," said Jerame Thurik, Chief Marketing Officer for Concur. "Upgrading their tools from outdated to automated is the best way to reduce costs, boost bottom-lines and help SMBs focus on what matters most - the success of their business."

Meanwhile, according to new SMB data from Endurance the bulk of small businesses are looking at mobile options, but many haven't yet opted to create a mobile presence because they 'don't have the skill/knowledge' to probably enter the space.

According to the Endurance report 78% of SMBs surveyed don't have mobile solutions in place although 72% believe mobile would improve their business. The survey results also show about half believe mobile is a leading challenge for them; about one-third (37%) worry about the time and resources required to open a mobile sales option.
