Reports: Ecommerce, sales important to shoppers

Two new reports are pointing at 2014 holiday shopping trends as a kind of new normal for shoppers. The trends: online/mobile buying options and sales.

First, Connexity's Bizrate Insights has released data indicating that nearly two-thirds (67%) of Cyber Monday shoppers received free shipping offers; the data also shows that sales and discounts are growing in importance for shoppers. More than half (52%) say they received site-wide discounts/promotions while shopping over the holidays; 23% report they 'only buy' if they get sale/discount offers.

Other interesting findings from the report include:

• 37% of shoppers used mobile devices over the 2014 holidays
• 43% say they found Cyber Monday deals via email messaging
• 74% report say they shopped in-store less because of their ecommerce buys on Cyber Monday

"Our research often uncovers surprising insights for retailers--like how nearly a quarter of Cyber Monday online buyers will only buy if they have a promotion, deal or discount," says Hayley Silver, Vice President of Bizrate Insights, a division of Connexity.

Meanwhile data from Clustrix underlines the importance of mobile; according to their new data about three-quarters (76%) of consumers shopped via mobile device over the 2014 holidays with sales influencing the majority of holiday buyers. The Clustrix data also shows:

• 48% of consumers shopped online instead of in store on Black Friday
• 62% report they 'prefer shopping' online year-round
• 87% say they are influenced to buy because of sales
• 11% say they'll buy items simply because of a sale price
• 74% say better shipping prices/options would influence their buying on Cyber Monday
