Brits love mobile for Valentine's Day research, shopping

Consumers researching and buying gifts or experiences for Valentine's Day are making good use of digital technology, according to recent research from RadiumOne, with mobile a popular choice.

A survey, conducted by research agency TPoll for RadiumOne in the UK, found that almost a third (30%) of Brits will use a mobile device to research ideas for Valentine's Day. Among 18-34 year olds that figure rises to 42%.

Purchasing via mobile is also popular with more than a quarter (26%) using their smartphone or tablet to buy a Valentine's gift as trust in the channel rises. Again, this figures rises to 34% among younger users.

Mobile is also popular among last-minute gift buyers with 62% using the technology during the week leading up to Valentine's or even on the day itself. Furthermore, men are more likely than women to research gifts on a mobile device - 39% compared to 21%.

"In recent years mobile technology has revolutionised UK shopping and nowhere is this more apparent than amongst the younger generation," says Rupert Staines, European MD at RadiumOne. "This group tends to be both more digitally-savvy, dependent and demanding. What we're seeing is people researching Valentine's gifts on the go and then being comfortable purchasing later online via their desktop, mobile or tablet."

Despite the rise in digital technology, nearly two-thirds (64%) said they will still consider heading to the High Street stores to buy for Valentine's Day.
