WhatsApp monthly userbase outstrips Twitter, Instagram combined

With 30 billion messages every day and 700 million monthly active users, WhatsApp now has a monthly active user base larger than Twitter and Instagram combined.

The acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook for a record-breaking sum certainly looks to be paying off.

Figures posted by WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum in his New Year post on Facebook say it all - the equivalent of nearly 350,000 message every second and an astounding 700 million monthly active users. While WhatsApp's monthly active user stats are yet to reach the dizzy heights of Facbook's 1.35 billion, they already put Twitter's (284 million) and Instagram's (300 million) firmly behind them.

WhatsApp has been successful in growing its user base by 40% in less than a year, though the growth rate seems to be slowing. It took four months for Whatsapp to go from 500 million users to the 600 million mark it hit in August, 2014, and another five months to reach today's 700 million milestone.

Keep your eyes peeled for bigger and better things from WhatsApp in the coming year.

"As humbled and excited as we are by these numbers and our continued growth, we're even more excited to keep building a great product in 2015," wrote Koum on his Facebook Page. "Most of all, we're grateful that so many of you are using WhatsApp to stay in touch with your friends and family, business colleagues and classmates. We promise to continue working hard to make WhatsApp even better."
