Top 3 tips to improve content linking strategy

There are a wealth of portals in the online space purported to help retailers better engage consumers. Some work and some don't, but one expert says linking strategies can be just as important.

First, go deeper with links.

"To get the basics out of the way, always link to the products mentioned in your content where possible. The easier you make it for readers to buy products, the more likely they are to do so. If you're writing a gift guide and want to include a particularly useful campfire coffeemaker at Cabela's, don't just link to the generic Cabela's homepage: Include a deep link that takes readers directly to the coffeemaker," said Alicia Navarro, CEO, Skimlinks.

Second, use social media to create buzz.

"Once you've placed quality CRC on your site, make sure to use social media as a tool to share this content with your readers. For example, if you've described a recent camping trip and referenced your campfire coffeemaker (with a deep link to the product page!) in a blog post, also make sure you Instagram it, tweet it and post a link on your Facebook page to maximize viewers. Social media is becoming increasingly important in driving views and bringing your content to your readers' attention so don't miss an opportunity to share," said Navarro.

Third, use data to improve the content strategy.

"One of the primary advantages of monetizing and implementing a CRC strategy is what the data can tell you about your readers and their preferences. You can analyze data like views, click-throughs, sales, content sharing and much more to gauge how your readers are engaging with your content, and then use that information to refine your strategy. For example, you might find that your readers prefer a certain brand of campfire coffeemakers over another. Using this insight can help you tailor your content to your readers resulting in more satisfied followers," said Navarro.
