Reports: SMBs optimistic, looking to search to connect

US veterans are leading the charge into microbusiness territory. That is the takeaway from a new poll out from Sam's Club and Gallup. According to the numbers about 20% of microbusinesses (5 to 15 employees) are owned by veterans and about one-third (34%) of those are making at least $100,000 per year.

What's more, these SMB owners are optimistic about what the future holds. The Gallup poll found most (86%) of those surveyed believe their business will either stay the same or improve over the next year. Just over one-third say they don't expect their business to grow over the next year

"Sam's Club is humbled and encouraged by the positive impact our nation's service members are making in the small business community," said Rosalind Brewer, president and CEO of Sam's Club. "One of the biggest needs in the veteran community is employment. Sam's Club is making a concerted effort to support initiatives including Hiring our Heroes and V-WISE (Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship) to give vetrepreneurs the tools and training necessary to prepare for a career beyond the military."

Meanwhile, new data out from the BIA/Kelsey Local Commerce Monitor indicates more small and medium sized businesses will be pushing additional budget dollars into search. Their data indicates about 60% of higher-spending SMBs are 'making search a priority' over the next year.

"The LCM findings indicate small businesses want to improve on the ability for consumers to discover them," said Steve Marshall, director of research, BIA/Kelsey. "SEM, SEO, and pay per click are fundamental to achieving this goal, particularly with the growth of mobile search."

Local search dollars are expected to total at least $7 billion in 2015.
