Survey: Product reviews influence more than half of shoppers

Now that the kids are settled in school families are turning their attention to the holiday season. According to some experts shopping for the 2015 holidays will begin as early as mid-October, and one new survey identifies three key trends that could help retailers and brands thrive.

First, don't lay off the product reviews. The new survey from Offers.com indicates more than half (53%) of shoppers are influenced to buy products because of positive product reviews.

"Many times, shoppers use outside review resources," said Howard Schaffer, Vice President, Offers.com, "but sometimes, they'll read the reviews right on a retailer's site to get the information they want. Retailers should be more aggressive in obtaining product reviews from purchasers and making reviews prominent on product pages."

Second, discount offers and other savings factors are key. According to the Offers data about 53% of shoppers are already using online coupons or codes and more than 60% said they've abandoned an online cart because of pricing.

"The best way to reduce shopping cart abandonment is to implement savings opportunities for savvy shoppers," said Schaffer. "Supplying coupon codes to customers can really have a positive effect on sales. Retailers can increase conversion rates and customer satisfaction by supplying online codes to deal and coupon websites like Offers.com."

Third, make it simple. Nearly half of online shoppers (41%) say they choose to buy online for the convenience factor while another one-third (31%) say they choose which sites to frequent by the quality of the site itself.

"Convenience plays a huge role in shopping behavior," said Schaffer. "Everyone is busy these days, and a retailer's mobile site needs to be highly optimized for consumers on the go. Using intricate category trees can increase mobile usability and make for a convenient shopping experience."
