Study: Santa's Using SaaS

Confident online shoppers are prepared to leave their online orders until just days before Christmas, according to new research from Saas shipping, tracking and systems integration platform provider NetDespatch, which means retailers need to optimize their delivery processes.

While a survey from suggests that financial worries are pushing consumers to plan ahead for Christmas, NetDespatch's study, 'Santa's Using SaaS', reveals that there are many who plan to leave their online gift purchases until as late as possible.

The U.K. survey found that leaving gift purchases until the last minute is a hard habit to break whether on- or offline. While the younger generation is more organized, with a quarter starting their gift buying back in September, over a quarter of overall respondents say they intend to leave their shopping until November. A fifth will leave it later, not starting to shop until December.

Every year, it seems, retailers announced last ordering days that are closer and closer to Christmas Day. While that may be convenient for last-minute shoppers, "disappointment may be on the cards... if goods don't arrive on time", says Becky Clark, CEO of NetDespatch.

"We know that online shopping provides a huge opportunity for retailers, but in order for consumers to remain happy with their online experiences, the order, despatch and delivery mechanisms have to be efficient, which is not always easy or straightforward," said Clark.

Other highlights from the survey include:

- 88% will shop online for Christmas purchases;

- Shipping costs (27%), missing a delivery (25%) and returning an item (14%) are the three things that irritate consumers most about online shopping;

- 85% of online shoppers prefer to goods to be delivered to their home address yet three-quarters work full-time;

- 43% of online shoppers said that if they are not home to accept a delivery they would like the option to have the item left with a neighbor.
