by Kristina Knight

Kristina: Is there a danger to digital tax filings?

Mark Grace, Vice President, Global Consumer, Asia Pacific and Latin America of Absolute Software: Filing personal tax returns online saves time and money but consumers should be aware that there are risks. If they use tax filing software they should be aware if their information is being saved on the company's servers and take steps to protect it including using a secure password. Consumers are always drawn to the convenience of digital tax filing and often forget about having extra safeguards on their devices. This is especially important to consider during the period of time when financial documents are known to be available on many devices. Tax season signals even more risk to consumers than usual, therefore it's important to take proactive measures to protect personal data.

Kristina: What are your top tips that will help consumers protect their private information?

Mark: First - secure the device they are using to file their taxes and the confidential information that is saved on these devices. Today consumers can file their taxes digitally on a laptop, tablet or smartphone. These devices make it easy to files taxes from anywhere but these devices are also easy to lose and are attractive to thieves. Consumers should protect the data on these devices by purchasing a theft-recovery solution. Absolute LoJack is a software-based theft recovery solution for laptops, tablets, and smartphones, which allow users to protect their personal data through remote lock, delete and locate features while providing the services an investigations team. Absolute LoJack is backed by the Absolute Investigations Services team, all of which are former law enforcement agents. Once an Absolute LoJack-protected laptop or mobile device owner completes a police report and reports the laptop, phone or tablet as stolen to Absolute Software, the Investigations Services team begins their recovery investigation and work with law enforcement officials to ensure a safe recovery.

Kristina: Beyond tax season, how can consumers make their digital devices more secure?

Mark: Consumers should protect and secure their laptops, tablets and smartphones all year round. With Absolute LoJack installed and activated on a device, consumers can rest assured 365-days-a-year that if their protected device is stolen; the Absolute Investigations Services team will work to get it back. They also have the ability to freeze or wipe the device of all confidential information.
