Early Cyber Monday may be eclipsed by 'Middle' Cyber Monday in UK

Experian has published its online retail predictions for the 2013 holiday season in the UK and reveals that 'Middle' Cyber Monday could eclipse Cyber Monday in terms of the number of visits to retail websites.

Monday 2nd December, 2013, Cyber Monday, is set to be the busiest pre-Christmas shopping day of the year, according to the latest insights gleaned from Experian Hitwise. The firm expects 113 million visits to retail websites on Cyber Monday from UK Internet users, a 1% increase on the manic online shopping day last year.

However, the record-breaking day could be eclipsed by what Experian has dubbed "Middle" Cyber Monday.

Because Cyber Monday is early this year, the digital marketing solutions firm predicts that there will be in excess of 110 million visits to retail websites on the Monday following Cyber Monday - 9th December. The reason for this later surge in online shopping is, they say, due to increasing consumer expectation that retailers will deliver gifts closer to Christmas.

"This Christmas is going to be the biggest ever in terms of online retail visits and December 2013 should be the first month that the UK reaches the 3 billion benchmark for visits to retail websites," said James Murray, Digital Insights Manager at Experian Marketing Services.

"What we don't expect to see this year is the well-defined peaks and troughs of shopping activity over Christmas. With the growth of mobile and the ease of quick one-click shopping, we expect to see the homogenization of shopping days as consumers are less confined in their shopping habits."
