Statista: 20% locked out of Facebook at work

Do you, or your employees, use Facebook at work? Many do. According to new figures released by Statista, almost one in three log on to the social network at least once during the working day.

Statista_Logo_Schrift.jpgStatista's survey findings reveal that 29% of Americans check out Facebook at least once a day while at work, followed by Google Mail (24%), Yahoo Mail (23%), YouTube (14%), Twitter (10%), LinkedIn (8%) and Pinterest (5%).

However, what Statista's data doesn't show us is how long, and for what reasons, employees visit these sites. It is possible that their activities on social media and web mail are business-related, checking brand Pages, interacting with customers or uploading video or other content. Or perhaps they're checking these sites during breaks or lunch time?

Of course, employers could ban the use of such sites in the office, during work hours. But is this an effective, or even necessary, move? After all, most employees can visit the same sites on their mobile device. Some employers do try to control their workers' use of social media - 19% of employees surveyed by Statista said Facebook is blocked at their office, 15% can't access Twitter at work and the same is true for YouTube.

What do you think? Should access to Facebook and other social media sites be banned at work?
