40% of most-shared Instagram videos are from brands

Video distribution and content development provider Touchstorm has just released its Video Index showing that only 74 brands appear in YouTube’s top 5,000 publisher list.

However, brands seem to be doing rather better in the short-form video world accounting for 40% of the 1,000 most-shared videos on Instagram.

The most-shared brand on Instagram in September was MTV with 84 videos in the top 1,000 garnering a total of 134,110 shares in total across Twitter, Facebook and the blogosphere. The NBA, Peanuts and GoPro make up the top 4.

Other brands such as Samsung, Nike, BMW, Disney, General Electric and Red Bull all feature in the Unruly Viral Video Chart’s top 1,000 Instagram videos.

According to Unruly’s U.S. president, Richard Kosinski, Instagram videos now account for almost 10% as many Tweets as YouTube videos and that “smart marketers are no longer measuring success based on a YouTube view count and advertisers understand that it’s people first, platform second”.

Of course, there’s a reason why Unruly has released this swathe of data. The company has just released a new product set aimed at brands who want a bigger Instagram presence and who want to evaluate those videos for shareability and effectiveness.
