Android app revenue to double in 2013

The surge in Android adoption is reflected in the platform's doubling of mobile app revenues this year, according to new research from ABI Research.

Apple's IOS continues to lead all other mobile operating systems' revenue by a long shot. However, with more Android devices in use, the platform is clawing back on Apple's lead.

According to ABI Research's Mobile OS, Browsers and Applications Research Service, Android smartphone app revenues will increase significantly in the coming year - from 59.1% to 65.9% compared to Apple iOS smartphone app revenues, reaching $6.8 billion.

It's not just a numbers game. Android's mobile app revenue increases can also be attributed to Android's app ads, courtesy of Google.

"Google has been incredibly successful at mastering targeted online advertising," says ABI Research in an announcement. "Additionally, Android's willingness to incorporate carrier billing for its app purchases could prove to be a very decisive factor against iOS in-house payments."

Figures released by Google at its annual I/O Conference in May, 2013, revealed that in-app sales on Google Play have grown significantly in the last year - by 700%.
