Report: More SMBs embracing mobile

More small businesses (SMBs) are embracing mobile inside their stores. That according to the new Local Commerce Monitor from BIA/Kelsey. Mobile payment options are leading the way, with 40% of SMBs surveyed reporting they are now using mobile point of sale (POS) options.

PayPal and Square are two mobile POS options that brands are embracing. In addition to the 40% who report they're now using mobile POS, 16% say they'll implement the option within the next year.

"Mobile continues to make impressive inroads into the SMB market, as both a marketing vehicle and as an element of the business infrastructure," said Steve Marshall, director of research, BIA/Kelsey. "A closer look at the data shows adoption of mobile and social varies across SMB industry sectors. The LCM data reveals professional and home and trade services are embracing mobile in a big way, with service providers essentially becoming walking POS terminals."

Other interesting findings include:

• 32% of SMBs are using mobile to engage shoppers
• 72% say they're using social to promote the business
• 52% say they have a Facebook page, 25% have created a Google+ Local page
• 66% say they are 'very engaged' with social

"Together, mobile and social tools are transforming the way SMBs acquire and retain customers," said Marshall. "With the heavy use of social media, SMB marketing is quickly becoming a two-way engagement rather than a one-way promotion."

As for how SMBs are engaging in social, those surveyed said they're 'responding' to comments, blogging, Tweeting/Updating social pages and pushing a loyalty program

Full findings from the Local Commerce Monitor will be presented at the Leading in Local: SMB Digital Marketing conference in Austin, Texas from September 11 - 13.
