LinkedIn launches Sponsored Updates for newsfeeds

Marketers looking to get their LinkedIn announcements into the newsfeeds of those who aren't followers now have the opportunity to do so with the introduction of Sponsored Updates.

Marketers can already advertise on the social network for professionals, but those ads appear on the right hand side of the screen. The new Sponsored Updates will be integrated into the newsfeed, making them a lot more noticeable.

"With Sponsored Updates, marketers will be able to distribute this content directly to relevant professionals in a place their customers and prospects are already consuming professionally relevant content," says David Hahn, LinkedIn VP of Product Management.

"Marketers can target Sponsored Updates to any segment of our premium audience based on professional profile data across more than 225 million members," he added.

Clearly marked as "sponsored", the updates are viewable across all devices, including smartphones, tablets and desktop. Included in the ad format are links to allow members to follow the sponsoring company, or to Like, comment or share.

LinkedIn members with an account representative will have the new feature available to them already but any company with a Page on LinkedIn will be availed of the service by the end of July.

Pricing choices are either CPC or CPM, and Sponsored Updates can appear in any one of 20 languages. To help fine-tune activity, analytics will be provided.

LinkedIn joins with many other social networks in providing the service, including Facebook and Twitter.
