Top 3 tips for SMB mobile optimization

Small businesses are great at incorporating new marketing efforts, just look at the social space. But where mobile is concerned, many SMBs continue to lag behind their larger counterparts, many because of the costs associated with mobile optimization.

The hibu platform is one that can help a small business create and optimize mobile sites that will engage the always-on mobile consumer base. I recently had the chance to chat with hibu about their platform and the SMB mobile space.

Kristina: Recent research shows more than 80% of SMBs aren't optimized for mobile. Why the delay when mobile marketing is taking off quickly?

Matt Anderson, hibu Chief Digital Officer: To date, small businesses have not been equipped to capture the mobile opportunity - they just haven't had the necessary tools delivered in a simple format in one place where they can manage everything. Mobility options for small businesses can also be overwhelming, leading owners to stick with what they know and are familiar with.

Kristina: How can local marketplaces like Ebay or Amazon help a small retailer? And how important is mobile optimization for this kind of engagement?

Matt: eCommerce powerhouses like eBay and Amazon are small retailers' largest competitors. Optimizing for social, local and mobile is critical for small businesses to ensure they are listed in a consumer's search queries to drive traffic in store and online. If a consumer sees they can purchase a product or service nearby, they may very well be inclined to support local business.

Kristina: What are your top 3 tips for SMBs in mobile optimization?

Matt: The first thing a small business needs to do is ensure their mobile site is a great place to call 'home'. A small business' mobile commerce powered website needs to be optimized for people navigating with their finger and not knowing where they are going. It's critical not to cram too much content onto the site.

Secondly, small businesses should make sure to register on all online and mobile directories in order to increase awareness and broaden the syndication of their site and SEO. A lot of this "claiming" activity is free.

Finally, small businesses should maintain an active and vibrant social media platform, which can help generate likes and increase engagement. Social media engagement such as comments, tweets, likes and shares, can help drive social discovery, online word-of-mouth and organic search.

Kristina: Tell me about the hibu platform...

Matt: hibu business is an online store to help small businesses fight back against large enterprises in the battle for mobile and online customers. With hibu, a small business can create a website or storefront that is fully optimized for mobile, and start selling and advertising to customers in under 10 minutes. Customers can choose from do-it-yourself or do-it-for-me options and can try key products free for 30 days.
