Reports: Savvy digi-marketers may reap Mother's Day rewards

With Mother's Day right around the corner, kids and dads are scrambling to find just the right gift; and gift, for many, may be found online. And savvy digital marketers can still reap those rewards.

According to a new infographic out from vSplash Mother's Day represents a near $3 billion opportunity for smart retailers in the online space.

"On average, 75% of independent retail stores will be difficult to find online. The only outlier is florists, and this is not surprising, since many of the national buying networks - think FTD - have invested heavily to have their local distribution points be digitally visible. Taken together, improving the online experience of these shops and stores is estimated to be nearly a $3B market opportunity," said Neal Polachek,

Meanwhile, TechBargains reports that moms' need for technology may be slowing. At least for now. According to their survey, in 2012 more than 90% of moms wanted an iPad for Mother's Day - more than wanted flowers. But this year's survey found that only about three-quarters of moms are hoping for an iPad. Some other interesting findings:

• Mom would rather receive a getaway weekend than a new smartphone (67%)
• 13% say they're interested in some kind of electronic device

Finally, moms responding to a recent survey say they'd prefer sentiment to cost this Mother's Day. More than 40% say they prefer receiving 'sentimental/handmade' gifts for Mother's Day while 27% said they'd like new jewelry. Fewer than 20% say they want flowers.

As for how Mother's Day shoppers will spend, about half will spend less than $40 while 22% will spend over $60.
