Report: SMBs falling behind in tech

Small businesses may be some of the earliest adopters of social media platforms, but when in comes to technological infrastructure these same businesses are falling behind. According to new data many small businesses are behind the tech curve when it comes to website development.

According to the report:

• 75% of SMBs surveyed don't use analytics to measure performance
• 60% don't believe they 'have the tools' to understand site analytics
• 60% don't have mobile websites or don't know if their existing site is optimized for mobile

More than half of SMBs say they are worried that the don't have the tech-capabilities to compete with larger brands. In fact, about one-third say they'd take a new website over any other marketing option.

"Small businesses know how important their web presence is for presenting a desirable online identity and attracting new customers, yet don't fully understand how to achieve those goals, implement new technologies, or adapt to new trends as deftly as larger companies," said Phillip Klien, CEO of SiteApps. "Especially shocking is how few small businesses utilize tools like Google Analytics to measure their website performance - that's like flying blind in a storm. There's a clear need here for simple, non-technical online marketing solutions."

There is good news from the small business camp, too. Most (55%) report they 'reached their marketing goals' in 2012. Of those focused on customer acquisition, email ranked as the top tool, following by social media and review sites. Moving forward, those surveyed say they will focus more energy - and ad dollars - on improving their websites (41%) and upgrading the customer experience (29%).
