comScore: Desktop spending up 13% YoY

eTailers, you aren't seeing things. According to data out from comScore desktop-ecommerce increased 13% in Q1 2013, to reach more than $50 billion. A strong showing considering the first quarter, in general, is a low sales time as consumers pay off holiday credit card bills, pay taxes and focus on their budget-based New Year's Resolutions.

The Q1 numbers mark the fourteenth straight quarter than ecommerce sales have shown an increase; it's the tenth quarter for double-digit growth.

"The first quarter of 2013 was fairly strong for online retailers, with total e-commerce sales surpassing $50 billion for only the second time on record," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "While the year-over-year growth rate of 13 percent remained healthy, it was a point or two below that of the preceding quarters. One potential explanation for this mild deceleration is the payroll tax increase, which went into effect in 2013 and which removed some disposal income from Americans' wallets. That said, as long as job growth continues and consumer sentiment remains positive, the outlook for e-commerce in 2013 remains bright. However, one wild card is the possible enactment of legislation requiring state sales taxes to be collected on every e-commerce transaction -- which would reduce the Internet's traditional price advantage and possibly dilute the channel's growth rate."

Ecommerce now accounts for about 10% of discretionary spending.

Much of the increase in spending is allocated into Digital Content/Subscriptions. This should come as no surprise as more consumers adopt smartphones and tablets, and begin getting more content from mobile outlets. Also hot categories: Apparel/Accessories, Sport/Fitness and Consumer Electronics. All of these categories showed at least 20% growth.

Speaking of mobile, m:commerce shows the highest spending category as Apparel/Accessories with mobile shoppers spending more than $1 billion over the first quarter. Of online shoppers in the Retail mix, about half the time spent online shopping was via a mobile device.
