More info you can't ignore about need for mobile-friendly websites

Following on from recent research highlighting the importance of mobile-optimization for email comes a new infographic that should kick the butts of marketers that have yet to develop mobile-friendly websites.

by Helen Leggatt

A new infographic from Demandforce reveals that, by the end of 2013, more people will use a mobile device to access the Internet than their PCs. And yet, despite the meteoric rise in mobile adoption, a whopping 90% of websites are not ready to be optimized.

Recent Google research found that, when mobile users visit a website that is not mobile-optimized, whether it's a favored brand or not, 50% will use it less if it does not operate correctly and efficiently on their mobile device. So, you're not just frustrating new customers, you're also frustrating existing customers. Furthermore, 67% are more likely to go on to buy from a site that has been optimized for mobile. You have been warned.

DemandForce wanted to find out which mobile website user interfaces consumers deemed most important, and the following should give marketers insight into what they need to do, at a minimum, to keep their mobile visitors happy.

1. 78% desire a quick route to the information they want via swift navigation, requiring the least amount of clicks possible.

2. 76% want a "better smartphone screen fit".

3. A clean and efficient look and feel is desired by 74%.

4. 73% want the ability to save information for future reference.

5. 69% want to limit fat finger syndrome by being presented with bigger buttons.

The consequences of not providing a mobile-friendly site are obvious. Customers will go elsewhere (52%), be left feeling frustrated (48%) or feel that the company is not interested in their business (48%).

The Demandforce infographic is but one of many findings being released that highlight the need for businesses to address their approach to mobile customers. Other reports you may find useful include those from iAcquire/SurveyMonkey, BlueHornet, Knotice, and Econsultancy/Adestra,
