Australians love to travel, whether it's to remote areas of their huge country, or backpacking around Europe. Increasingly, Australians are using mobile to make travel purchases, whether at home or on the road.

The number of Australians making travel purchases via PayPal increased 1600% during 2012 compared to the previous year, according to the payment processing company.

Mobile now accounts for 20% of all its travel transactions and Australia is one of PayPal's leading markets.

A spokesman for PayPal said over the past two years more traditional travel companies have helped pave the way for online bookings, by moving more business models and content online.

"Over the past twelve months, we've seen Australian companies take the next step by investing in enhanced mobile sites and apps for their travelling customers," said a PayPal spokesperson.
