Study: Passwords tiresome for many Americans

Passwords for webmail, passwords for content sites, passwords for social media sites. Passwords, passwords, passwords. Substitute the tone of Jan Brady's 'Marcia-Marcia-Marcia' and you have an inkling of how some Americans are feeling about passwords according to new research from Janrain and Harris Interactive.

According to the Janrainreport password fatigue is high with over half of respondents having at least 5 unique passwords.

Some interesting takeaways include:

• 8% of those surveyed have over 20 unique passwords
• 30% have at least 10 passwords
• Over one-third (37%) have to ask for help in remembering passwords
• 84% don't like website registration requirements, especially when passwords are involved

"With all of the different websites consumers login to on a regular basis - from email and social networks to online banking and ecommerce sites - it's no wonder people are struggling to remember such a large number of passwords," said Larry Drebes, CEO of Janrain. "What's surprising is that consumers think cleaning their bathroom, or in the extreme cases trying to solve world peace, sounds preferable to adding yet another password to the list."

Hating passwords is nothing new - there is a reason many people choose 'password' as their password. It's easy, they don't expect to be hacked.

And one more thing: sites may be missing out on customer data on those website registrations. Most respondents (62%) said they would enter more personal information into the forms if they thought the site would actually use that information. For example, a shopper might enter a marital status if a site might use that information to suggest gift purchases for their significant other.

One way to ease the password situation? Drebes suggests creating a strong password - a combination of numbers, letters and symbols - for the sites most visited by a consumer. Use that password across the sites, he suggests, and update the password regularly to protect privacy.
