Poll: Mobile increasingly important for purchasing say Americans

When it comes to mobile shopping, research isn't the only thing people are looking for. To date many in the industry have believed mobiles were used primarily to research products or share deals through social networks. New research out from Placecast indicates mobiles are increasingly being used as a purchase point.

placecast.jpgAccording to the survey 39 million (20%) of US adults have made a purchase from a mobile phone within the last year. Just over one-third (34%) of smartphone users have made a mobile purchase while 20% of standard mobile users have made a mobile purchase. Moreover most (59%) say the ability to make mobile purchases is 'at least somewhat' important to them.

"Just as purchases of smartphones have been booming in recent years, so too have purchases using smartphones," said Placecast CEO Alistair Goodman. "In just two years, we saw that interest in making purchase via mobile increased by eight percent - meaning that millions of Americans are recognizing the convenience of using their phones for shopping. Retailers that realize the potential of mobile will be able to reach consumers in an incredibly personal way, cultivate a relationship with them, and increase their overall sales."

Other interesting findings include:

• 3 in 10 US adults who don't already receive say they are open to text alert type advertising
• 50% of smartphone users say they've used a GPS/mapping app to find a retail location
• 44% have accessed the mobile website of a retailer they've purchased from in the past
• 34% have downloaded retail apps
• 24% have either downloaded coupons or scanned barcodes for discounts while in-store

More than 1900 US adults were polled for the survey; Harris Interactive conducted the research on behalf of Placecast. This is the third wave of a series of polls called "The Alert Shopper"; the polls have been conducted since 2009.
