As we mark National Women's History Month in the US, it is interesting to note that women are leading a new pack. The business pack. The Alibaba data shows that number of female entrepreneurs using Alibaba increased 72% (2008-2011); the 1.1 million US women utilizing the platform is a higher number than that from any other country. The closest to the US totals were from the UK (261,000 female members) and India (168,000 female members).

According to data from women own more than 10.5 million businesses in the US and employ more than 19 million workers. Female-owned businesses bring in more than $2 trillion in sales each year. And, while the top cities for female-based businesses are LA, Chicago and New York, you're also likely to find female owned businesses in relatively smaller cities like Seattle, Phoenix and Detroit.

In fact, the American Express Open State of Women-Owned Businesses notes that the launch rate of female-owned businesses exceeds the rate of male-owned, but that the size of their businesses remain smaller than that of male-owned businesses.

"Women-owned firms continue to diversify in all industries," was written in the report. "The fastest growth in the number of women-owned firms over the past eight years has been in education services (up 54%), administrative and waste services (47%) and construction (41%). [Overall] women-owned firms have done better than their male counterparts over the past 14 years. The number of men-owned firms (51% of all US firms) grew by 25% between 1997 and 2011 - half the rate of women-owned firms."
