'Gigabyte Generation' gobbling up mobile data

For the eighth year in a row mobile data traffic growth has continued. Today, almost a third of smartphone users gobble up more that 1 gigabyte of data each month. This year could see mobile consumption doubling again, according to a new report from Chetan Sharma Consulting.

As new devices and new network technology rolls out, data traffic will continue to grow at quite a pace, according to Chetan Sharm Consulting's study.

Today, approximately 30% of smartphone and tablet users gobble up a whopping 1 gigabyte of data each month.

Some developers, such as PhoneUsage and Onavo, have realized that many mobile data users aren't sure how much data they're chewing up with their Pandora and YouTube habits. They have developed apps that help users manage their data consumption.

"In the early days of smartphones, people got into the habit of using as much data as they wanted," Phillip Redman, an analyst at Gartner, told the New York Times. "And unlike with voice services, where at least you can get a feel for how many minutes you've been talking, it's a lot harder to gauge how much data you're using when you're listening to music or browsing the Web."
