The social network for professionals, LinkedIn, has revealed it could soon start introducing mobile ads. The news comes hot on the heels of Facebook announcing that it could introduce mobile ads as soon as next month.

During the company's fourth-quarter earnings call last week LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner said mobile is now its fastest-growing category generating 15% of all unique member visits, up from 9% midway through 2011.

LinkedIn launched its redesigned apps last August as well as a mobile-optimized website. While there was a sharp rise in activations across both iOS and Android platforms, Weiner said more were coming from iOS.

"Because members need LinkedIn to work wherever they work we've made great strides in our platform in mobile offerings in 2011," said Weiner.

LinkedIn reported revenue for the fourth quarter of $167.7 million, up 105% on the $81.7 million reported for the fourth quarter of 2010. Net income for the fourth quarter 2011 was $6.9 million, compared to a net income of $5.3 million for the fourth quarter the previous year.
