Groupon said that since the launch of its app back in March 2010 it has attracted 9 million users and 25% of all purchases in December, 2011, were made via mobile. The daily deals company's merchant mobile app was also attracting businesses with 12,000 now on board.

Groupon has recently launched Groupon Thailand, the 47th Groupon outside of the U.S.

While on the topic of exotic destinations, Groupon said Tuesday it has acquired the travel research start-up Uptake a company whose focus is on social travel and helping consumers find hotels and in-destination activities.
