The number of smartphone subscribers in America has grown 45% since 2010, according to Nielsen’s most recent State of the Media: The Mobile Media Report for the third quarter of 2011. Today 44% of American mobile subscribers own a mobile phone compared to just 18% two years ago.

Apple continues to be the top smartphone manufacturer in the U.S., with just over 28% of the smartphone market, followed by HTC with a 15.8% share.

Android is the most popular operating system by manufacturers, with a 44% share of the smartphone market.

Two-thirds of smartphone users have downloaded apps to their device, the most popular category being ‘games’. However, it’s social networking with which both Android and iPhone users spend the most time. Nielsen found the Facebook app is being used more than any other mobile application.
