How mobiles are engaging with content, commerce

As more consumers adopt smartphones and add data plans to their monthly bills, they are changing the way they engage with businesses, content and information providers. Read on to learn what mobile devices are gaining buzz and how mobile users are engaging across the third screen.

According to NM Incite the iPhone 4S is the most talked about smartphone so far this holiday season. It's been the subject of numerous blog posts, social media updates and news posts. From July through December 40% of the online buzz about smartphone was for this device. Other hot mobile tickets include iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Droid Bionic. As for operating systems, Apple leads (66% of buzz) Android (23% of buzz) and RIM/BlackBerry (10% of buzz).

As for what mobile users are doing via phone, many are shopping in-store and using QR codes to find deals or product information. comScore finds most smartphone users have shopped via phone at least once; most buy digital goods, apparel or enter the daily deal space via mobile devices.

Mobile consumers are also using devices to navigate their city - get directions, find local businesses and learn about commute delays. According to new data from HopStop their users are most likely to log-on at 11 AM or 8PM, with most logging 30 minute car/bus rides and five minute walks to arrive at their destination.

Social and video options are growing in importance for mobiles, as evidenced by a $2.5 million round for financing for Jun Group's social video platform. They serve millions of opt-in video views through social and mobile platforms.
