Brits to spend $860 million during Christmas and Boxing Day

On Christmas Day, when the rush of prepping the food and wrapping gifts is over and you can kick back with family and friends, what will you be doing? According to a new forecast from the IMRG many Brits will be... shopping online.

That's right, even after weeks of preparation and shopping the urge to continue with retail therapy won't be satiated and, on Christmas Day, Brits will spend around $289.2 million online.

There's little let-up on Boxing Day, too, when even more will be splashed out in the sales - $570.6 million according to the IMRG.

David Smith, the IMRG's chief marketing and communications officer, noted that last Christmas Day had already seen a 26% increase in online spending, making the forecast of a 12% increase this year even more impressive.

"Shopping on Christmas Day might not appear to quite be in the Christmas spirit, it is worth considering that many of these sales could actually be associated with popular gifts people have received, such as downloadable content for MP3 players and Kindles," said Smith.

It should come as little surprise that consumers are logging on during Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Last Christmas Day Facebook received more site visits than Google as people logged onto wish their friends Merry Christmas and this year even more people will be gifted gadgets that require them to head online to use them.
