Mobile shopping big this holiday season

Shoppers who use mobile to make purchases expect to make, or have already made, more purchases using their mobile device this year than last, according to a mobile shopping survey from Motricity.

The majority (70%) of mobile shoppers intend to use their devices far more this year than last, found the survey of 403 American adults. Consequently, Cyber Monday will be a mobile shopping-fest as well as an online frenzy.

Men are set to be the biggest mobile spenders, particularly on big-ticket items. On average they will shell out $312 on the most expensive item bought via mobile compared with $222 for women.

And don't make the mistake of thinking it is Gen Y who are leading the way with mobile shopping. Motricity's research found that almost twice as many mobile users age 25-44 feel shopping using their device is more convenient - 42% vs. 23%.

When IBM forecast that 15% of Black Friday sales would come from mobile, many in the industry scoffed. After all, two years ago just 1% of sales came from mobile.

However the figures speak for themselves. Mobile was responsible for 14.3% of all online shopping traffic on Black Friday, more than double that recorded by IBM last year. Meanwhile, sales from mobile devices reached 9.8% of digital retail transactions, tripling the 3.2% of last year.
