Black Friday trends to tech buys

The holiday buying season is off to a good start with more than $815 million in online retailers pockets according to comScore. With a one-quarter increase in online sales, it would seem more shoppers are finding their gift buys online, but what are they looking for?

According to eXelate, Black Friday ecommerce was all about the tech, which is in line with trends. The three hottest tech buys were e-readers, tablets and handheld video games. In fact, eXelate notes that eight of the ten highest gaining categories for online shoppers were in personal tech/gadgets. Also of interest, mobile commerce showed strong gains for Black Friday.

This isn't surprising. Several forecasts have predicted that tablets, specifically Apple's iPad, would be the most-desired gift this year - for both kids and adults. In fact, the top three most-wanted gifts, where kids are concerned, were Apple's iPad, the iPod Touch and iPhone, finds a recent Nielsen report. Nearly 20% of adult men are hoping to find tablets under their Christmas trees finds Burst Media. Video games are hot tickets for both kids/teens and adults.

What deals are bringing shoppers in cyber doors? The tried-and-true according to Deloitte with 69% of surveyed respondents saying they look for online merchants who offer free shipping. About half of those surveyed said they will shop online this year.

All the Black Friday news isn't great, however. Visible Technologies tapped in to social networks, and while shoppers did, indeed, hit online outlets in droves many more were turned off by Black Friday ads. While Walmart's ads resonated with social shoppers, Target's ads were found to be 'tired'; over half of social conversations relating to retail involved Walmart. Target captured about one-quarter of the social conversation.
