Twitter ads appear in users' timelines

Starting today ads placed on Twitter, known as Promoted Tweets, will begin showing up on the timelines of users that follow the advertiser.

twitter2 logo bird.jpgOver a year ago Twitter launched Promoted Tweets which were presented to users based on keywords in search. Earlier this year eMarketer estimated Twitter had generated $45 million in advertising during 2010 and projected revenue of $150 million in 2011 rising to $250 million in 2012.

From today, those paid Twitter ads will begin appearing in users' timelines, irrespective of if they have performed a search, if that user follows the brand that is advertising.

According to the Twitter blog the more visable ads will appear just once and can be easily removed with just one click.

"From the start, our philosophy around advertising has been simple: We put our users first and strive to create products that enrich the Twitter experience for every Twitter user," states Twitter's blog. "We're excited about this next step and look forward to your feedback."

Brands such as Dell, Red Bull, Groupon, HBO, JetBlue, LivingSocial, Xbox and Starbucks will soon have their ads appearing in users' timelines.
