Placecast releases self-serve ecommerce alert

Placecast has released a shopping tool that may help small businesses better connect with mobile shoppers. Called ShopAlerts Self-Serve, the tool gives smaller merchants the ability to launch mobile promotions. The ShopAlerts platform sends mobile messages to shoppers when they enter or near a shop they've opted into.

placecast.gifShopAlerts Self-Serve is available for small businesses as well as larger brands including retailers, yellow pages providers and even financial institutions. Brands using the platform can geo-fence their area so that when a consumer enters they are sent a message about a promotion or deal; the platform also tracks redemptions so businesses know how the campaign is faring.

Through the platform brands can:

  • Upload and manage store information

  • Create a geo-fence

  • Create a promotion and allow consumers to opt-in

  • Track coupons or other redemptions

  • Obtain performance analytics
  • "This simple tool can be used by any business - from sole proprietor to large retail chain - to create and run their own geo-fence mobile promotions easily, and fully protect consumer privacy due to the double opt-in nature of the service," said Alistair Goodman, Placecast CEO.

With back to school shopping right around the corner, a platform like this could reap rewards for retailers. According to new data from Ypulse, most teens and young adults spread their spending out over a month, rather than making a lot of purchases within a single day. About 40% of college students and 20% of high schoolers will use their cell phones to find store locations, 30% (College) and 15% (High School) to research prices and between 20% and 30% will use mobiles to get discounts and coupons.

According to Placecast information 60% of ShopAlerts users found the messages "innovative" (60%), said the messages increased the chance they would visit a store (79%) or that a ShopAlert resulted in a purchase (65%).
