Local connections are getting a lot of play this week, as not one but two hyperlocal entities have launched. Earlier this week Local Yokel Media launched, connecting local marketers with localized content and consumers. Today, Chalkboard launches, a hub promising to deliver hyperlocal ads to consumers through both mobile and online destinations.

"We are ready to scale rapidly in the U.S. market," said Saumil Nanavati, CEO and co-founder of Chalkboard Pte. Ltd. "Our product has already seen incredible traction and usage because it's instant and easy to use. We see businesses updating messages up to 11 times a month. We offer a simple marketing solution for daily use and this resonates well with small businesses."

Through Chalkboard local businesses can:

  • Offer unlimited real time updates or deals to consumers within one mile of their location

  • Connect with consumers through mobile devices

  • Add feeds to social networks including Twitter and Facebook
  • "Chalkboard is a uniquely positioned product geared toward small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), a very large but underserved market in the mobile space. The company will be establishing a new category in the U.S. to help businesses connect instantly with local consumers," said Joi Ito, general partner at Neoteny Labs and advisor to Chalkboard. "Most SMBs do the majority of their business locally. Thus, in most cases mass reach media is a waste of time and money."

The platform is currently in a Series A funding roun in the US; Neoteny Labs is one existing investor. The platform already has nearly 5 million active monthly users and 4,300 businesses have signed on to it.

    • This takes mobile marketing and the "daily deal" to the next level. Being able to connect with consumers on the go is one of the biggest advantages of mobile marketing. Being able to target consumer based on their exact location at any given time means businesses can target their best prospects and know they are doing so.
