No doubt bolstered by the insanely popular title Angry Birds, the downloading of game apps beat other popular categories such as weather and social networking apps to become the most popular category during the month of May.

According to Nielsen's figures, based on a study of over 30,000 mobile users, 64% had downloaded a game app in May while 60% downloaded a weather-related app and 56% downloaded a social networking app.

The average time spent playing mobile games in the last 30 days is higher for iPhone users (14.7 hours per month) than Android (9.3 hours per month) with the average across all device types being just short of 8 hours each month.

Blackberry and feature phone users were more likely to play pre-loaded games.

Nielsen's findings hold great news for game app developers. A whopping 93% of responders who had downloaded a games app within the last 30 days were prepared to pay for it, compared to 76% who said there were prepared to pay for a news app.
